Dement & Kleitman - Rapid Eye Movement and Dreaming

Dement & Kleitman - Rapid Eye Movement and Dreaming

Postby adinaazmat » Sun Mar 15, 2015 9:07 pm

Dement and Kleitman conducted a laboratory experiment to investigate the link between rapid eye
movement (REM) and dreaming.
(a) What is meant by ‘qualitative data’? [2]
(b) Describe one piece of qualitative data from the study. [3]
(c) Compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative data using the Dement and Kleitman study
as an example. [10]
(d) Discuss the extent to which the study by Dement and Kleitman is reductionist. [10]

Hi there!

I can explain you more about part (a), i guess other parts can be answered by someone else.

So Qualitative research is concerned with the quality or qualities of an experience. Qualitative research rejects the idea of their being a simple relationship between our perception of the world and the world itself, instead arguing that each individual places different meaning on different events. Qualitative research generally gathers text based data through exercises with a small number of participants. The advantage of using qualitative data is that it gives information regarding individuals hence it is always considered more deep than the quantitative research.

Hope this helped :) Btw where you from?

PARTS a,b:
Dement and Kleitman:
The qualitative data was the recall of a dream
(or not), the estimated duration (5 or 15 mins) and the content (such as throwing tomatoes).
Both qualitative and quantitative data was gathered in this study and the final data includes
both types. Quantitative data was known from the EEG, such as when a participant entered
REM or NREM sleep and for how long a participant had been in a particular stage. Also
known was the direction of eye movements.

PARTS c,d:
Your answer should include, Scientific nature of testing in contrast to other methods.
Biological processes investigated in contrast to other methods.
Comparisons/contrasts (can be argued either way).
Quantitative versus qualitative (scans are quantitative and self reports can be both).
Validity of measurement.
Reliability of measurement.
Ethics of measurement (e.g. scans are uncomfortable and self reports are intrusive).
Reductionism versus holism (scans are reductionist and self reports can be holistic).
Demand characteristics.
Social desirability.
Experimenter/observer bias.
Usefulness.
- An approach to understanding the nature of complex things by reducing them to the
interactions of their parts, or to simpler or more fundamental things.
Reductionism is the argument that we can explain behaviour and experiences by reference
to only one factor, such as physiology or learning. Reductionism is an overly simplistic explanation of behaviour .

PART b:
- Qualitative data was gathered by waking participants with a door bell, to various patterns,
and asking them to recount into a tape recorder the dreams they were having when they
were woken, if any.
- Two examples of qualitative data were descriptions of the dreams participants were having,
and descriptions of the participants’ reactions when woken, such as that they were
bewildered

PART c:
A strength of qualitative data is that it provided detailed information about the content of
the participants’ dreams, which could not be described numerically. This allowed Dement
and Kleitman to assess whether the content tallied with the visible movements of the eyes.
- One weakness is that the qualitative data is difficult to analyse and to represent in a concise
clear fashion; themes are hard to draw out and Dement and Kleitman are left with only one
example to back up their theory in the case of horizontal eye movements, for example.
- Quantitative data includes how many dreams were recalled after being woken in REM and
NREM, and the number of times the participants were right in their estimate of dream
length.
- A strength of quantitative data in this study is that it allows easy analysis and
comparison, for example to see exactly how many times as a percentage the participants
could remember their dreams while woken in REM compared with NREM.
- A weakness of quantitative data is that it does not provide insight into how the
participants felt about their dreams and does not build up a detailed picture of sleep and
dreaming experiences.
